Pawsitive Reading Pals is a Columbia River Pet Partners program that allows children to read to animals in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The goal is to help children improve their reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as having a positive effect on their confidence and self-esteem.
Improving Reading Skills: Pawsitive Reading Pals offers our handlers training in techniques to help children improve their reading skills. Basic strategies for supporting fluency and comprehension skills improve the impact of our time "on the blanket." We also stress organizational skills that help our handlers be more effective in their sessions with the children.
Free Books for the Children: We offer our handlers new books to give to the children who read with them. The books can be used as incentives or rewards, and encourage participation in our reading programs.
Some of the programs in which our Pawsitive Reading Pals participate include:
In a library, children are given a pawtographed book after reading to a team for up to six reading sessions.
At a school, a reading specialist helps select a book for each child chosen to participate in the reading program.
At a hospital, each new patient the team meets is given a pawtographed book after reading to the animal.
Our Reading Program: Pet Partners Read With Me program teaches organizational skills for animal-assisted reading programs, and Columbia River Pet Partners Pawsitive Reading Pals offers additional training to our members to help improve the reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skills of the children we serve.
Donations: Columbia River Pet Partners is an all-volunteer organization with minimal operating expenses that are fully covered by membership dues and contributions to our General Fund. 100% of funds donated to the Pawsitive Reading Pals program go to provide books to the children we serve.
